AV Test’s recent Test Report on Free Anti Virus app’s for Android mobile devices are eye opening. The independent testing institute AV Test.org, based in Klewitzstr. 7, Germany, tested some of the free antivirus apps available in the Android Market and their test report indicates that many Android owners are using below par AV’s to protect their valuable device.
AV-Test conducted the test on a Samsung GalaxyTab (GT-P1010) running Android 2.2.1. They have chosen some free apps compatible with this device from the Android Market. Besides the free AV’s (you can find the list of free apps taken for the test by following the link at the end of this article) two popular paid Anti Virus apps, Kaspersky and F-Secure, were also taken for analysis.
Based on the on demand scan test the best free Anti Virus app is Zoner AntiVirus Free with 32% detected malicious apps compared to the 50% detection level of paid AV’s, F-Secure and Kaspersky. The real-time guard functionality result was also in favor of Zoner AntiVirus Free. It detected 8 out of 10 samples during the installation attempts. Here Kaspersky and F-Secure detected all.
Other free apps used in the test performed poorly in the above two cases and the surprising fact is that the installation status of these apps in the Android Market. Some of the below performed apps enjoy more users compared to Zoner Anti Viurs.
